Reference number:

The Caledonian Society of Otago was established in Dunedin in 1862. It was the first Scottish society formed in New Zealand, and its objects were the support of charitable causes, literature, customs, and cultural and physical accomplishments, particularly relating to Scottish traditions.

The society's first sports gathering was held in the New Year of 1863 on the Grange Estate at the north end of Leith Street. In 1865 the society held its gathering on the Northern Recreation Reserve (now the North Ground) and this was to be the headquarters of the society for a number of years. A grandstand was erected at the cost of a little over one thousand pounds.

In 1870 the directors purchased a site of 15.1 acres in South Dunedin to be developed as a sporting arena for athletics, cycling, football, and cricket with provision for a bowling green. In 1875 the grandstand was removed from the North Ground and re-erected at the new Caledonian Ground.

In later years the society continued to place emphasis on the holding of its annual games with athletic events catering for primary and secondary school children through to top class open competitors. These events have been held in conjunction with cycling races, piping and dancing. Pipe band displays have been a feature of the games.

The final meeting at the Caledonian Ground in South Dunedin was held in March 1999 and a new Caledonian Ground at Logan Park was officially opened in October 1999.
