Description:

Sir William Fox, an explorer, politician, social reformer, journalist and artist, arrived in Wellington on the 'George Fyfe' in 1842. He became editor of the 'New Zealand Gazette' and 'Britannia Spectator'. In 1843 Sir William Fox was one of the first party of Europeans to journey into Wairarapa and explored Wairarapa and Nelson as agent for the New Zealand Company.

Scope and contents:

This collection consists of Fox's journal and typewritten transcriptions relating details of the voyage in the ship 'George Fyfe' from Portsmouth to Wellington. Also included are details of the expedition from Wellington to Wairarapa, including travels through bush, their hardships, the terrain, weather, flora and fauna and the Maori settlement at Wairarapa. Also contains letters and illustrations.
