Francis Newton (Frank) Smyth was brought up in the Catlins district. He later lived in Central Otago and Dunedin. He was employed for nearly 30 years as a 'Rawleigh's Man', selling the company's medicinal, nutritional and cleaning products door to door. He wrote poetry and music, and also collected ballads and poems, mostly about rural and colonial New Zealand and Australia.

Scope and contents:

The collection includes papers relating to Smyth's work for Rawleigh's, including correspondence, cash books and newsletters. There are music scores for songs he wrote. There are also many poems, some manuscript and some published (chiefly in newspapers). Some of the poems appear to be by Smyth, although they are not always signed. There are a large number of photographs, including some early-twentieth century images of South and Central Otago. There are numerous photographs of family and friends, many of them unidentified. There are also various miscellaneous items.
