Robert Arthur Lawson was born in Scotland in 1833. He commenced his architectural training in Perth around 1848, completing in Edinburgh in the early 1850s.

    

James Manson of Thurso, Scotland, first came to New Zealand in 1858, helping build First Church in Dunedin. After striking over working conditions, he and a friend returned to Scotland.

    

The Church was established in 1862. It merged with First Church of Otago in 1966. Following the merger, members of the former church continued to meet socially.

    

Biography: Arthur Louis Salmond was the son of J[ames] Louis Salmond who had been apprentice to R A Lawson, the architect of First Church.
