Through an active career beginning in the mid 1960s, Dr Jill Hamel has established herself in a line of distinguished field archaeologists of southern New Zealand. Jill has worked on sites of moa and moa-hunting, especially in the Catlins, and she was a pioneer in the application of ecological approaches to the elucidation of archaeological evidence in New Zealand. More recently, she has been instrumental through her work on the Protected Natural Areas and Pastoral Tenure Programmes, in bringing the recording and study of European historical remains up to essential standards of survey and description.

Scope and contents:

The collection contains archaeological reports relating to Alexandra, the Nevis, Queenstown, Macraes, the Otago Peninsula and Dunedin. The reports have been prepared for the Department of Conservation, the Dunedin City Council and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
