Personal collection of NZ405329 Flight Sergeant Collis Eric Sharp, RNZAF. Sharp trained as a pilot at RNZAF Harewood and Woodbourne in 1941 before undertaking fighter conversion training in the United Kingdom. After a stint with 245 Squadron RAF in Chilbolton, UK, he was posted to 605 Squadron RAF in Singapore in early 1942, but as Singapore fell to the Japanese while he was en route, he was diverted to the Dutch colony of Batavia (present day Java). Sharp was unable to be evacuated from Batavia before it too fell to the Japanese, and as a consequence he was taken prisoner. After one unsuccessful escape attempt, he was sent to Bandoeng POW Camp in Batavia, and then on to Camp Osaka 4B Ikuno, in Japan. Here he spent the rest of the War, until his repatriation in 1945.

Before his capture, Sharp had torn out the recorded pages in his flying log book and concealed them in a piece of hollowed-out bamboo. He managed to keep them safely hidden for the duration of his time as a prisoner of war.
