Description:

The collection consists of photograph albums relating to scouting in Howick from 1953 to 1992. There are also some newspaper cuttings, photographs and notes dating from 1919-1930.

Although there is evidence of scouting in Howick as early as 1919, a Wolf Cub Pack was officially formed on 9 October, 1940 and the Boy Scout Troop followed on 21 April, 1941. Additional sections were added after World War 2 and population growth prompted a split of the Howick Group to create the Bucklands Beach Group in 1955. A Sea Scout Troop was registered on 14 November 1960. In 1990 there were four Scout Groups in the Howick Scout District; Minerva, Cockle Bay, Te Puru and Howick and six more in the Hauraki Scout Group in Pakuranga.

After being housed in several different venues the Howick Scout Den was built in Gibraltar Street in 1958. Subsequently a boat shed was constructed at Shelley Park to house the Sea Scout cutter purchased in 1963 and other craft.

The collection consists of four photo albums/scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings, notes, photos and postcards. Album I relates to the Cub Pack from 1953 to 1974, album II relates to the Sea Scouts from 1960-1991, album III is the Howick Sea Scouts scrapbook from 1961-1992 and album IV relates to the Howick Sea Scouts from 1963-1976. There is also a file containing a collection of certificates, registration and correspondence and two regatta/jamboree penants.

The albums have been photocopied to preserve the original layout but the material has been transferred for archival purposes and re-arranged where necessary.
