Description:

Joseph South, a brickmaker, his second wife Mary, and the five youngest of his children immigrated to New Zealand from London, arriving in 1874 on the 'Buckinghamshire'. The family first settled in Andersons Bay but later moved to Fairfield where Joseph established a brickworks.

Scope and contents:

The collection includes letters and postcards written by Ernest Newton to Bessie South telling of his experiences on the Western Front during World War I. These letters have been transcribed. There is also a series of articles on the South family by Judith Cranefield.
