The Barry Lett Gallery was opened in 1965 with three partners, Barry Lett, Rodney Kirk Smith, who had both owned dealer galleries previously, and Frank Lowe, an Auckland architect. Lowe sold his interest to Kim Wright in 1966, and in 1975 Barry Lett left the gallery to paint full-time. In 1976 the Gallery became known as RKS Art. Rodney Kirk-Smith died in 1996.

Scope and contents:

The collection is divided into six major sections. These are papers relating to artists and exhibitions; papers relating to the administration of the Gallery; papers relating to Rodney Kirk Smith's outside activities, particularly in the arts community; papers relating to other galleries; publications and printed material; and photographic material. The papers include correspondence, financial records, clippings, photographs and slides.

Access conditions:

Restricted : The collection is restricted until 2050. Access is at the discretion of the Hocken Librarian. The written permission of living artists will also be required.
