Collection comprising paper documents, uniform items, service medals, and photographs relating to NZ403553 Warrant Officer David Malyon Russell, RNZAF.

This collection includes: personal service diary for the year 1941; autographed menu card from the Sergeant's Mess at RAF Grangemouth; letters from the RAF Record Office and Commanding Officer of 485 (NZ) Squadron RAF regarding Warrant Officer Russell's death and funeral; newspaper clippings (including death notices and rolls of honour); official commemorative scroll; service medals; photographs; uniform badges, brevets, and chevrons.

Warrant Officer David Malyon Russell was born in Pukekohe on 2 September 1916. He began service with the Royal New Zealand Air Force on 29 September 1940, subsequently gaining his pilot's 'wings', and embarked for the United Kingdom on 29 April 1941. He served with 485 (NZ) Squadron RAF from 17 February 1942, until 5 May 1942, when he was forced to bale out during combat over the English Channel, along with fellow 485 Squadron pilot, John ("Johnny") Milne Checketts. While Checketts was rescued one hour later, Russell was not picked up for several hours, and consequently died of exposure that evening. Husband of Violet Ada Russell (nee Surridge).
