Elder, J.R., Dr : Research papers and transcriptions relating to Rev. Samuel Marsden

Elder, John Rawson, Prof., 1880-1962

Level of description:

0.42 linear metres

Reference number:

Rev. Samuel Marsden was a chaplain, magistrate, agriculturalist, and missionary who founded the Christian mission in New Zealand.

The transcripts were used by Elder for his book 'The Letters and Journals of Samuel Marsden 1765-1838' published in Dunedin in 1932.

Dr T.M. Hocken spent years of his life collecting Marsden material, as he intended to write a book dealing with the journals and life of Marsden.

Scope and contents:

The collection includes transcripts of Marsden journals and correspondence, as well as biographical papers, publications and illustrations.

Dates covered:

Circa 1813 - 1937

Archival history:

It appears that most of the transcripts were prepared by Dr T.M. Hocken. The transcripts include notes and annotations, probably by both Dr T.M. Hocken and Dr J.R. Elder. There is an unclear link between the collected papers of Samuel Marsden (ARC-0001) and J.R. Elder's collection relating to Marsden (ARC-0035). They share the same reference numbers (for example MS-0057 and MS-0177), and there are some items which could be seen as part of the collected papers of Marsden (for example the memoirs of Marsden at MS-0177/016). The provenance of Elder's collection (ARC-0035) is also complicated by the amount of material collected and created by Dr T.M. Hocken, who intended to write a biography of Samuel Marsden. It seems that Elder was simply the last biographer to use the papers and so the provenance was assigned to him. Some material (apparently MS-0177/038 to MS-0177/043) was donated by the estate of Dr Elder.
