The Canterbury Association was set up by John Robert Godley and Edward Gibbon Wakefield in 1848 to plan a Church of England colony in New Zealand. The Association was supported by a number of members of Parliament and English peers, including the Archbishop of Canterbury. The settlement was to be made up of selected Anglican families, with the land bought from the New Zealand Company and sold to settlers to raise money for the building of schools, roads and churches.
