Dennis Stewart was born on 31 August 1911 in Wanganui. Educated at Otago University graduating MB ChB 1936 and later BMed Science. He joined the Medical Corps in 1940 and served with 1 NZ General Hospital NZMC in the UK, Greece and the Middle East as a specialist pathologist. In 1942-43 he commanded a Field Transfusion Unit in the Western Desert. He later posted again to 1 NZ General Hospital and returned to New Zealand in 1944. He ended his career as the Director of Pathology at Christchurch Hospital. During his military service Major Stewart took many photographs and his extensive collection reflects that time capturing the work of his unit in the UK, the Western Desert, the evacuation of Greece, and back in Egypt.
