Manuscript diary kept by 968734 Flight Sergeant Bill Allen, 75 (NZ) Squadron RAF covering the dates 10 June 1944-21 April 1945. It covers his being shot down, capture and experiences as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft 7, Bankau, near Kreulberg.

Allen, an air gunner was the sole surviving crew member of Lancaster I ME-702, shot down during a raid on Dreux. After a period on the run alone and with some British paratroops, he was captured and spent the remainder of the war in German hands.

It was written up in pencil in a YMCA Wartime Log notebook, specifically issued to prisoners for this purpose and Allen has included other items such as sketches and photographs, some probably added later. The final section was completed by his brother, as Allen never completed his account and was less inclined to do so in later life.
