Percy Aekins was a volunteer in the New Zealand Field Artillery between 1909-1911 and was on active service during World War One. He served as a Corporal in Samoa and France in 1915 and was discharged at his own request in 1915. He rejoined in 1916 as a Corporal and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served on the Western Front until Aug 1919.

Aekins' personal papers include a brief diary kept between Jan - May 1919 which describes army life in Germany while waiting for his repatriation. Also included are various army proficiency certificates as well as his discharge certificates for 1915 and 1919.
