David Edward Hutton was the son of David Con Hutton (1843-1910) who founded the Dunedin School of Art and was first secretary of the Otago Art Society. He studied art, design and architecture in Dunedin and in Britain under Sir Banister Fletcher. He worked as an architect in Christchurch from 1917-1931, where he designed Opawa and Philipstown schools and Christchurch West District High School (now Hagley Community College).

This collection comprises the artist's letters and sketchbooks
