The Invercargill City Library has been at its current site on Dee Street since 1989. In 2005 the Invercargill City Council purchased the building next to the Library and converted the facility into an archive respository. The archive conversion was completed in March 2008 with the first Archivist for the new facility arriving in September 2008.
The Archive respository works in close conjunction with the Information Services section of the Library. In general, the Archivist cares for typically unpublished material donated by members of the Southland community (and Invercargill City Council archives), while the Librarians of Information Services manage the Newspaper Collection, Research Collection (published) and Local Collection (typically published books pertaining to Invercargill and the Southland District).
