Description:

Batten was a saddler at Bulls. In November 1892, together with Wanganui photographer, Alfred Martin, and J. C. Blackett he went up the Wanganui River to photograph scenery. The diary records Martin's photographic methods, the difficulty of reaching Pipiriki in Hatrick's steamer 'Wairere', villages en route and the facilities at Pipiriki. Going on by canoe Martin took the famous photograph of the 'ladder scene', but above Opopo they were turned back by the upper river chief Te Kere Ngataierua who said the Queen's Highway stopped at Pipiriki. Returning down river Martin took the first pictures in the Maunganui-o-te-ao River.
