John Cade joined the Pahiatua Rifles in 1900, the Wanganui Guards in 1902, and became a captain in the Wellington West Coast Regiment in 1911. He served in France, Belgium and Germany, 1916-1919. In 1929 he became Lieutenant-Colonel of the Wellington West Coast Regiment, from which he retired in 1933. In civilian life he worked for the Public Works Department.

The papers include four diaries, November 1915-October 1919, covering his war-time service. On 17 January 1919 he dined with the Prince of Wales and on 9 October 1919 he recorded a riot on the returning troopship 'Remuera'.

There is a report on the voyage of the troopship 'Aparima' in which he noted the incidence of venereal disease after leaving Cape Town, embarkation and passenger lists for the 'Remuera', 1919; speech notes outlining his experiences at Messines Ridge, June 1917; and in the Rhineland, November 1918; military lecture notes; printed training sheets; routine orders for a camp held at Waverley, February 1933; and a photograph album of unlabelled military subjects, pre-1914.
