This diary is held as part of the collection deposited by Horace Fildes, but is described individually because Fildes did not alter the record.

George French Angas, son of George Fife Angas of the South Australia Land Company, was the artist of 'The New Zealanders Illustrated' (1847). He went to South Australia in 1843, where he participated in some of Governor George Grey's explorations, and visited New Zealand in 1844 when he made many sketches in the North Island. He was secretary of the Australian Museum in Sydney from 1853 to 1861 and then returned to England.

The volume records several separate journeys.

These are: 'Journal of a tour in the Isle of Wight' (September 14 to October 6, 1840); 'Journal of a voyage from South Australia to New Zealand in the schooner John Price' (July 31 to August 21, 1844), followed by an account of the journey Port Nicholson-Queen Charlotte Sound-Auckland (September 6 to 16); 'Notes of a voyage from Auckland to Sydney on board the Coolangatta, via Kawau and the Bay of Islands' (November 29 to December 30, 1844); 'Notes of a voyage on board the brig Emma from Sydney to Adelaide' (January 1 to January 20, 1845). The Isle of Wight tour is illustrated by two coloured maps as well as sketches and tipped-in engravings of views.

The three New Zealand journeys were used in Angas's published account, Savage life and scenes, (London : Smith, Elder, 1847), of which Fildes' also collected copies (ref. callmarks Fildes 965-968).

A trial in-house digitisation of the first page only has been undertaken.
