Abstract:
This collection contains records to do with Adcock's academic and social activities. There is a small amount of family correspondence, which is restricted. There are no patient records.

The collection includes published and unpublished papers by Adcock, and teaching material prepared by him. There are significant records to do with the Workers Educational Association (WEA) in England and New Zealand, including an unpublished history of the WEA in Wellington. Other significant material relates to the establishment of a Psychologists' Society in New Zealand, and to the activities of the United Nations Association of New Zealand (UNANZ).

Series 1, ref. adcjs01: Personal papers, includes: diaries 1953 and 1955-c1986; correspondence to do with family matters (restricted); records concerning Adcock family history; biographical and autobiographical notes; records concerning employment; curricula vitae and lists of publications c1960-1985; official certificates and invitations; financial papers.

Series 2, ref. adcjs02: Records to do with publications and research, includes: master set of publications c1930-1986; material to do with publications 1930-c1982 and undated; requests for reprints, material to do with various psychological tests; professional correspondence; publications by other authors to do with psychological research; Ernest Beaglehole papers (re-located to the Papers of Ernest and Pearl Beaglehole).

Series 4 (ref. adcjs04) Papers, includes: notes from Auckland Teachers Training College 1923; material to do with Te Uku School and 1975 reunion; notes from Birkbeck College, London, c1944; material to do with Army Lectures in England c1941-1944?; Material to do with learning and teaching Esperanto, c1927-1986; material to do with the WEA in England and in New Zealand; material to do with the United Nations Association of New Zealand (this includes material to do with various peace and dis-armament activities and groups); material to do with the New Zealand Psychological Society and with its predecessor the British Psychological Society (New Zealand Branch); material to do with other groups and activities where Adcock was a member rather than on the Executive; personal correspondence on political matters; publications by other authors relating to these interests.

Archival history:

John Cyril Adcock was the father, by his first wife Irene, of Fleur Adcock and Marilyn Duckworth. His second wife, Ngaire Valmai Adcock, also lectured in Psychology 1964-1988, and it was she who organised the deposit of his archives, which were voluminous and unsorted. Following the addition of further papers in 2010 the collection was arranged into record series created by the archivist.

Access conditions:

One box of personal and family papers is restricted.

Finding aids:

A more detailed inventory was prepared in 2010 following the transfer of additional papers. This is available in paper form in the reading room, or as an html or pdf file on request.
