Historical Notes

The Wellington Typographical Union, founded as the Typographical Society about 1862, became the Wellington Printing and Related Trades Union in 1934. From 1881 to 1892 it was the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Typographical Society and in 1939 it became the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand union. Westland joined the New Zealand Union in 1941 and Otago and Southland joined in 1945. The Wellington Female Printers Assistants Union joined the national body in 1940.

Scope & Contents

The collection consists of minute books and financial records of the various Wellington bodies 1884-1894, 1929-1955, of the New Zealand Union 1939-1948 and its immediate predecessor, a federated Association 1936-1939. Also included are financial records, consisting of two volumes and other miscellaneous papers, of the Wellington Female Printers Assistants 1920-1940.

This collection was compiled by Bill Nairn, retired Secretary of the Wellington Branch of the NZ Printing, Packaging and Media Union, for use for the publication 'Print and politics: a history of trade unions in the New Zealand printing industry, 1865-1995' by Peter Franks (Victoria University Press, 2001).
