The firm of George Routledge and Co. was the first firm to provide cheap editions of good popular novels.

They pioneered the paperbound Railway Library and provided cheap reprints of many popular novelists, including Bulwer Lytton, Harrison Ainsworth and Anthony Trollope.

Their surviving records, with contracts, publication books, wages books and sales extracts (but no general correspondence), were published in 1973 by Chadwyck-Healey (in their series 'British Publishers' archives on microfilm' with an introduction by Brian Maidment.
