Charles Elkin Mathews was a notable publisher of 'minority literature' from the 1890s to his death in 1921. From 1892 to 1894 he was in partnership with John Lane, when they published 'The Yellow Book', and several other renowned works. After Lane's departure to establish the Bodley Head, Mathews continued to be the first publisher of such authors as W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, Ezra Pound and Robert Bridges.

The collection includes family papers from the early 19th century and after Mathews's death, together with printed catalogues, drawings, proofs and correspondence relating to the firm's publications. The microfilm edition published by Chadwyck-Healey in 1973 (in their series 'Archives of British Publishers on Microfilm') includes a detailed catalogue of the correspondence and an introduction by Ian Fletcher.
