During the period 1863-67, the H.M.S. 'Esk', commanded by Lieutenant Francis Bouverie Clark, later Rear Admiral Sir Francis, spent a considerable time around the New Zealand coast. In 1864, the vessel took Sir George Grey to Kawau.
