Description:

Newland came to New Zealand on the 'Amelia Thompson' with his family in 1841 to live in New Plymouth.

He joined the militia and became a lieutenant in the Patea Bushrangers. These reminiscences were apparently written some time after the events concerned.

The collection includes reminiscences of the siege of Pipiriki, 1865 (17p.); the campaign on the West Coast against Titokowaru, 1866-69 (68p.); expedition to Turanganui, Poverty Bay, December 1868 (7p.); fight at Okotuku or Moturoa, inland of Waverley or Wairoa, 1868-69 (15p.); Te Wairoa, Hawkes Bay (5p.), a continuation of the expedition to Turanganui; and expeditionary force, Opotiki, East Coast, Bay of Plenty, September 1865 (42p.).
