Description:

Newland kept a diary of day-to-day events of his journey from England to New Plymouth on the 'Amelia Thompson', 1841, and his subsequent settlement in the community until 1873.

He became a Mason in England in 1822 and was later elected District Grand Master at New Plymouth.

Newland's diary is one of the few surviving daily accounts of New Plymouth prior to the establishment of the 'Taranaki Herald' in 1852.
