The Nelson Harbour Board was established by The Nelson Harbour Board Act, passed on 20 October 1900, and the first Board was elected 20 February 1901. It was established to develop the port which had suffered from shallow waters which restricted the size of the vessles able to dock. The 'cut' in the Boulder Bank was the first major harbour works undertaken by the Board and it opened 30 July 1906. Building new wharves and land reclamations were also important tasks the Harbour Board undertook. The Board held its last meeting 26 October 1989 and Port Nelson Ltd took over Port operations.
