John Scott was a Nelson builder and contractor who started his business around 1859. The business was located on the corner of Trafalgar Street and Halifax Street in central Nelson. It operated under John Scott until c1908 when Andrew Miller took it over. Some of the buildings built by John Scott included the Bank of New Zealand, and the Stoke and Whakarewa Orphanages. The plans are mainly those of John Scott but also include William Beatson, Stead Ellis, William Houlker, A F T Somerville, William Bethwaite, John George Blackett, A W Clayton, William Clayton, A R Griffin and Andrew Miller's plans.

The collection includes plans of houses, churches, hotels and commercial buildings dating from the 1850s to the 1910s. The plans were found in an old house behind the A.A. building, which belonged to the Miller family of builders. A fine collection of plans of early Nelson buildings.
