William Akersten (1825-1905) arrived in Nelson with his wife Lucy on board the 'Maid of Alicane' in 1855. He settled and established a ship's chandlery at the Port and acted as a marine surveyor and stevedore. He built the Albion wharf in 1857 and the Government wharf in 1859-60 with Turner. In 1876 he built the new government wharf. He was a Provincial Council member for Nelson city, and a Nelson city councilor.
