Description:

Margaret Cheston Brown was born in England and grew up in Sefton, in Canterbury. She graduated from Canterbury University College with an MA in History and then obtained a Diploma of Education. Margaret taught for three years at Marlborough College before marrying Murchison farmer, Malcolm Brown, in 1934. They became foundation members of the Murchison Museum and Historical Society, and Margaret began researching the history of the area. Margaret moved to Nelson in 1976 and was co-opted to the Nelson Historical Society Committee, beginning an eight-year term as Editor in 1977; life membership was conferred on Margaret Brown in 1987.
