Julius Lemmer was born in North Germany in 1871, migrating to Sydney at the age of 18 where studied music and became a master musician. He became the principal of the Nelson School of Music in 1899, studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London during 1914. He remained principal at the Nelson School of Music until 1944, and also taught music at Nelson College.
