Description:

Melvyn Courtney was born in Christchurch. After studying business administration he obtained a scholarship and trained in the grocery industry. He later moved to Nelson and eventually owned five supermarkets in the Nelson region. Mel was elected as the Labour MP for Nelson in the February 1976 by-election. He served on the Parliamentary Select Committee for Education and was the Opposition Spokesman for Fisheries and Horticulture for five years. He also served as a Nelson City Councillor for 6 years between 1974 and 1980. In 1981, Mel resigned from the NZ Labour Party and stood as an independent candidate in the 1981 general election, but was defeated. He stood again as an independent candidate in the 1984 general election but was not successful.
