Description:

Edmund Buxton established his general merchant business in Nelson in 1854. It was bought by Francis Hamilton in 1881 and greatly expanded, carrying on a large wholesale and retail trade in agricultural, mining, building and household equipment and groceries. Wool, hops and barley were purchased direct from farmers. The barley was malted for supply to breweries. The business was taken over about 1963 by Wright Stephenson & Co.

The records include letterbooks 1889-1909; journals 1886-1891; day books 1886-1904; account books 1891-1903; ledgers 1876-1897; cash books 1881-1907; wool cartage records 1908-1941.
