Description:

Brough came from Cumberland and worked on the Victorian goldfields, before arriving in Nelson in 1866. He worked as a prospector and then took up contracting, later becoming the Public Works overseer. From 1881 to 1884 he had government contracts to build a road through the Wairau Gorge. From 1895 to 1899 he had a contract to build a pack-track over the Wangapeka Saddle to the head of the Karamea River. The first volume of the diaries, 1883-1884, describes progress on the Wairau Gorge road with observations on the weather and people passing through the gorge. The second volume, 1895-1899, describes his work in the Wangapeka area and includes reports to the Chief Surveyor and observations on natural history.
