Description:

J.C. Richmond came to Nelson from Taranaki in 1861, to take up the editorship of the 'Nelson Examiner'. In 1862 he was appointed Provincial Secretary, and then became Commissioner of Crown Lands for Nelson Provincial Council. In 1865 he resigned and returned to Taranaki.

The diary was kept on a journey from Nelson to the Hanmer Plains. He describes the landscape and the accommodation houses and there are several pencil sketches.
