Herbert and Oswald Curtis came to Nelson in 1853, and established the merchant firm of Curtis Brothers.
Herbert Curtis was Provincial Auditor for a time, and M.P. for Motueka, 1856-1866.
Oswald Curtis was a member of the Nelson Provincial Council, 1857-1867, and was elected Superintendent of the province, holding that office until the abolition of the provinces. He was M.P. for Nelson, 1866-1879.
The papers comprise letter-books and correspondence regarding business affairs, official duties and family matters; a diary, 1881-1887, of Walter Sanderson Curtis, describing tramping trips in the Nelson region; three scrap-books of material relating to elections, sport, and family matters.
