Description:
John Barnicoat arrived in Nelson from England on the 'Lord Auckland' in 1842. Employed by the New Zealand Company he surveyed large areas of the province. In June 1843, he escaped from the conflict which resulted from an attempt to survey the Wairau. The following year he travelled south with Frederick Tuckett to select a site for the New Edinburgh settlement. Barnicoat sat on the Nelson Provincial Council, 1853-1875, and was Speaker, 1858-1875. He was a member of the Legislative Council, 1883-1902.
The papers comprise his journal, 1841-1844, which gives details of the voyage to Nelson, his survey work and the journey south in 1844. Other items include three farm diaries, 1845-1902; a plan of his Richmond property; and an address from the Governors of Nelson College. Typescript of the journal also available at Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, qMS sequence and Micro MS 256
