I accessed this material in January 2010 - while there are 15 boxes my interest was focused on the Gardiner genealogy prepared by Lyall contained in Box #7.
Lyall's approach was to write to all known descendants with a copy of their respective branch of the family seeking corrections/updates. He started in the 1940s, had some further activity in the 50s, and a final large effort in the years immediately prior to his death in 1966. I suspect that the collection of supporting correspondence is only a sample as the key genealogy document is huge at 23 pages listing 500+ individuals.
Interestingly, Lyall didn't explore the other records at the Nelson Provincial Museum (they may not have been readily available back then) as he would have been able to find photographs of many of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations and significant biographical information about their lives.
Since Lyall's death other family researchers have added to the material; the Australian branch of Aikens, a Falla descendant based in the USA, and other local NZ descendants. This is evident as they have new, or simply updated, material added to the collection in box 7.
