Since the organised colonisation of Christchurch the municipal authorities have maintained three public cemeteries in Christchurch: Barbadoes Street opened in 1851, and closed the use of all but existing plots in 1858; Addington, or Selwyn Street Cemetery, opened in December 1858 and closed 1884; and the Linwood-Bromley Cemetery opened in 1884.

These records transferred to the Canterbury Public Library in 1977 include: Christchurch Cemetery Board minutes, 1867-1901 (1 vol.); Registers, Cemetery book and burial plot books of the Barbadoes Street Cemetery, 1851-1885 (9 vols); Sexton's returns for the Church of England Cemetery (Barbadoes Street) 1868-1901 (11 vols); Cemetery registers, 1858-1918 (3 vols) and Indexes to interments (2 vols) for Addington Cemetery; Cemetery registers, 1884-1930 (2 vols), Register of purchases, 1884-1924 (1 vol.), and Indexes to the cemetery registers and register of purchases, 1884-1930 (3 vols) of the Linwood-Bromley Cemetery. All transferred to Archives New Zealand in 2001.
