Description:

Chaney's Crossing is 4km south of Kaiapoi. On 24 Jun 1905 subsidence caused by the flooding of the Waimakariri River caused a north bound train to derail.

Two passengers were killed and several injured. One of the dead passengers was Mr Robert James Alexander, the Headmaster of Kaiapoi Borough School.

The collection includes a report of the Inquest into the accident and newspaper cuttings relating to the event, which was widely reported in the local press.
