EAST Taieri Presbyterian Church

Level of description:

Reference number:

Former NRAM reference number:

The first Presbyterian church on the Taieri plains, East Taieri received the Rev. William Will in 1854, making it, with Clutha, the second settled charge in Otago. Will's ministry, from 1854 to 1899, saw the church established as one of the largest and most prominent in Otago. The high percentage of Presbyterians on the Taieri throughout this century has helped keep the parish strong and active.

Records include full series of marriage (1854-1979) and baptismal (1854-1959) registers and a near complete series of communion registers (1854-1958). Minutes of Session and Deacons' Court are held from 1854 as well as records of women's organisations, the tennis club, and a quantity of ephemera and memorabilia, including photographs of every minister to serve the parish.
