Historical Notes

The Hawke's Bay Women's Club first opened in Napier in 1928 in premises on the Marine Parade. These were destroyed in the 1931 earthquake along with the club records and effects. The Club went into recess until 1935 when it re-formed. It had new premises in 1937 and again in 1971. Its activities are mainly social, with entertainment organised for members. During World War II the Club was involved in patriotic work and fund raising.

Scope & Contents

The records consist of monthly meetings minute books and financial statements 1935-1960, 1965-1983, provisional committee annual meetings 1935-1949, ledger 1937-1949, visitor's books 1928-1931, 1937-1986, and annual reports and balance sheets 1938-1965. There is an indexed newspaper cuttings scrapbook about the club and its members 1947-1958, compiled by Mrs Clive Cornford and copies of Rule Books for 1929 and 1935, and miscellaneous items including programmes of jubilee luncheons 1978 and 1985.

There is also a brief biographical note about Mrs Cornford.
