Historical Notes

Though equal pay had been sought by women in the public service since 1914, the official campaign began in 1943 when a women's sub-committee of the Wellington Section of the PSA was formed. This later became known as the PSA Women's Commiittee. It was affiliated to the PSA Wellington Section Committee in an advisory capacity and undertook an active campaign for equal pay in the Public Service that culminated in the Equal Pay Act of 1960.

The records consist of minutes, correspondence files, reports, press statements, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, newsletters, notices, conference papers, submissions and circulars from the PSA and outside organisations and personal papers of members.
