Edwin Fairburn, son of the missionary William Fairburn, was born at Paihia on 27 April 1827. In 1835 the Fairburn family left Paihia for a mission station at Puriri, Thames, and five years later settled at Maraetai. The manuscript is a recollection by Edwin Fairburn of life in these areas and of incidents with the Maoris at the stations.

A sketch map of Paihia, and various other sketches, are included in the narrative. In addition, there is a letter from his sister, Esther Hickson, concerning the text, and an extract on the life of Hongi Hika by Hugh Carleton.
