These records appear to have been collated by the Secretary of the Records Committee, Mrs Rhoda Bloodworth, as the correspondence in the folders is addressed to her.

Historical Notes

Ellen Melville was one of Auckland's leading citizens and a City Councillor for 33 consecutive years. The Pioneer Women's Memorial Hall Committee was set up to fulfil her wish that there should a building in the city containing amenities for city and country women. It was planned to begin in Auckland's centennial year, but was postponed by wartime demands. As well as the building, a roll of honour was prepared and placed inside the Memorial Hall. This was based on a card index of names of women who had been pioneers in social, academic and civil life. Those eligible were Pakeha who arrived or were born in the Auckland Province before or during 1875. Descendants or others filled in registration forms which were collated by the Records Committee.

Scope & Contents

The records include the alphabetical folders of pioneer women containing the forms and letters sent to Mrs Bloodworth and a general folder about the building and finance for the Memorial Hall Appeal.

The set of registration cards from the project have been interfilled with the Auckland Provincial History cards in the New Zealand and Pacific Collection.
