This entry is a revision of NRAM C 78.

The records were donated by Paul Phillips of Auckland who was an important figure in the New Zealand Marching Association for many years and an instructor and chief judge.

Historical Notes

The New Zealand Marching Association was formally set up in August 1945 in Wellington as the New Zealand Marching and Recreation Association. Marching girl teams had been sponsored by business firms since the 1930's to provide a recreation activitiy for women and girls. The teams were composed of girls and women, but men were predominant as adminstrators and judges.

The Association consists of 17 centres throughout the country made up of local associations. The Auckland Centre was established in 1948.

Scope & Contents

The records consist of New Zealand Marching Association minutes, annual reports and financial statements 1971-1990, technical and information bulletins 1958-1978, photographs ca 1940-1970, choreograph plans, guidelines and handbooks for judges and instructors, reports of meetings of chief judges and instructors, circulars, and copies of the constitution, rules and by-laws. Printed materials include incomplete sets of the Association magazines "Quick March" 1953-1963, and "Quick Step" 1978-1990, histories of the Association, and a few overseas publications. Also with the archives are some cloth and metal badges used by judges and instructors.
