Thomas Naylor Beckett at an early age became keen on climbing in the local foothills. As he grew up he developed the outdoor interests of his grandfather T W N Beckett, a Fellow of the Royal Linnean Society of London and a lichens and mosses specialist.

While stationed at Ashburton, Thomas Beckett was instrumental in founding a local branch of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, known as the Erewhon Mountaineering Club.

He was one of a small group who explored and mapped every valley in the Rangitata watershed in the 1930s. Later he was president of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club.

These papers relate to mountaineering, the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, and the "Mountains of Erewhon" publication.
