Description:

William Herbert Alington (known as Herbert) was the son of Reverend John Alington and Charlotte Bellington. He came to New Zealand on the 'Matoaka' in 1860 and farmed at Thorseby, Springton. In 1879 - 1880 he bought the farm of Broadlands, Burnham.

He farmed at Broadlands until c 1886. He also worked at Rollitts flour mill, Ashburton and Lincoln College. He married Sophie Hardie of Oamaru in 1893. At some point after this he returned to England and was employed at New Zealand House. He had no family.

These papers include diaries kept by W H Alington on his farms in Springs County, South Rakaia and Burnham, as well as his shipboard diary aboard the 'Matoaka' in 1860. There are also six items of correspondence not relating to Canterbury.
