Westpac was first established in New Zealand in April 1861 as the Bank of New South Wales . The first branch to open in 1861 was Auckland in June 11, this was followed by; Lyttleton July 18, Christchurch July 19, Invercargill July 24, Dunedin August 8, Wellington September 2, Wanganui September 3

In 1982 Westpac took over the Commercial Bank of Australia and in 1996 it purchased Trust Bank New Zealand.

The archive holds historical banking records mainly from the Bank of New South Wales. Records include: photographs of banking premises and staff, first branch customer records (mainly from the 1800s), early staff records, premises records and advertising material about banking products and services.
